"The Button" is a deliberately simple garage mystery. Ace finds a forgotten
piece of equipment whose only comprehensible feature is an enormous red button
and whose only instruction is not to press it. Jack cannot explain the machine,
despite having wondered about it for twelve years.

Neither man can resist an unanswered question. They reach for the control at
the same moment, producing a beam large enough to illuminate rural Wisconsin
and Lake Koshkonong on its way into space.

The final exchange answers only the smallest possible question: the button
activates the beam. It does not explain the machine's purpose, destination,
origin, or why it spent twelve years in the garage.
